What Makes a Great Actor Headshot?

A great actor headshot is not simply a flattering portrait. It has a specific job to do: communicate your type, your range, and your readiness to work.

  • Clean, professional lighting that puts the focus on your face — no distracting backgrounds or over-processed edits
  • Natural expression that reads as genuine on screen — not a forced smile, not a blank stare
  • Multiple looks in one session: commercial (approachable, warm) and character (intense, edgy) in the same booking
  • High-resolution files suitable for Spotlight, Mandy, Casting Call Pro, and agency submissions

What to Expect From Your Session

Your session begins with a brief consultation — Bill will discuss your type, the roles you are going for, and which looks to prioritise. You will not be left to figure out your own expression in front of a camera.

Most actor headshot sessions run 1–2 hours and include 2–3 outfit changes. You will leave with high-resolution files delivered same day, retouched and ready to upload to your casting profiles.

The studio is based in Dalston, East London (E8 3QE) — 10 minutes from Shoreditch, well connected from central London.

Some Of Our Work

Browse recent actor headshots from our London studio. From emerging talent to established performers — Spotlight profiles, agent submissions, and casting call images.

Faq's for Actors Headshots in London

Spotlight requires JPEG files, minimum 300dpi, with specific aspect ratios. We deliver all files in Spotlight-compatible format as standard — no additional work required on your end.

Yes. Most actors book our Standard or Pro package specifically to get multiple looks in one session — typically a commercial (warm, approachable) set and a character (edgier, more intense) set.

You are welcome to come camera-ready or arrange your own makeup artist. For most actors, natural makeup works best. We can recommend makeup artists who specialise in headshot prep if needed.

Your edited files are delivered the same day — typically within 4-5 hours of your session finishing. We know how quickly castings move, so same-day turnaround is standard on every booking.

Avoid heavy patterns or branding. Solid colours, especially in mid-tones, photograph well. Bring 2–3 outfit options — the guide in your booking confirmation includes a full styling checklist.

On-location shoots in East London and central London can be arranged. Contact us to discuss requirements and location fees.

Wear solid colours that complement your colouring — avoid anything busy or distracting. V-necks and collared tops photograph well and draw attention to your face. Bring a few options including a plain white or black top. Leave heavy jewellery and bold logos at home. Your photographer will help you choose what works best on camera.

Your headshots should represent your authentic self — what casting directors will see when you walk into the room. Two distinct looks (one warm/approachable, one stronger/more serious) give you versatility across different casting briefs. We capture a range of expressions and feels in every session.

Capture both a warm, friendly smile (for commercial and casting work) and a more neutral, introspective look (for dramatic and character work). The key is an engaged, present expression — not a blank stare. Our photographers direct you through all the looks that work best for your casting type.

Update your actor headshots every 12–18 months, or sooner if your appearance changes significantly (new hairstyle, significant weight change, new look). Casting directors and agents need to see an accurate representation of you.

Yes. Most working actors have a range of headshots: a warm commercial look, a strong character look, and a theatrical or dramatic look. Having 3–4 varied images gives your agent flexibility when submitting you for different roles.

Actor headshots prioritise personality, range, and character — they should give casting directors a sense of who you are as a performer. LinkedIn headshots are optimised for a professional corporate context. Actor headshots tend to be more expressive and characterful.

Yes. Most actor sessions include time for 2–3 outfit changes. Bring a range of looks — smart casual, formal, and something that shows your personal style. Changes give you variety in your final selects.

Classic actor headshots use a simple, neutral background — grey, white, or black. The focus should be entirely on your face and expression. Busy or outdoor backgrounds can be distracting and date quickly.

For women, light professional makeup is recommended — enough to look polished on camera without looking made-up. For men, grooming should be clean and natural. Some actors prefer to do their own makeup. We can recommend trusted hair and makeup artists if you'd like a professional to attend your session.

Completely normal — almost everyone feels awkward at first. Our photographers are experienced at working with actors and will guide you through the session with clear direction. We'll warm you up with easy shots first, then build toward your best looks. The more sessions you do, the easier it gets.

You'll receive a minimum of 3–4 final retouched images from a standard session, with the option to purchase additional selects. We capture many frames during the session so you have genuine variety to choose from in your selects.

Yes. Outdoor locations in London — parks, urban streets, historic buildings — can add energy and variety to your headshot portfolio. We plan outdoor sessions around London's best natural light conditions.

Absolutely. Your headshots are your professional marketing images and should be used across all casting platforms, your personal website, social media, and email signatures. We deliver files in the correct sizes and formats for all major casting platforms.

Your main headshot should be your strongest, most versatile look — the image that best represents you and your range. Your photographer will help you identify your best frames during the session. Your agent or a trusted colleague's opinion is also valuable.

Standard delivery is within 1 business day. Express same-day delivery is available. We understand casting deadlines and can prioritise urgent requests.
